Being a leader often means, leading by example. You might think, “well duh..” but let’s take a moment to really unpack that statement.
A difficult reality I now face as my team stays the same age and I get older, is that the definition of success is changing. It’s no longer the candle burning at both ends, and the triple digit paycheck.
I often hear the words, “I wouldn’t want your job.”
Are we portraying what we want our employees to be, and are we doing it the right way.
Are we working out, eating right, getting enough sleep, and are we sleeping well?
My answers to these questions are about 50/50. What will change this?
Trust and communication. Realize this isn’t your show and give others a chance to shine. Delegate, let them make mistakes, communicate, pass information on. Overwhelmed? Talk about it.
Are you having these problems because of staffing? It’s a good excuse, but it isn’t your burden alone, share the weight and make a plan. Maybe you need to change your hours, maybe you need to adjust your pay, maybe you need help recruiting.
Present a plan that makes a better future for yourself, and the trickle down is a better environment for your team as well.
If you are happy, balanced, and healthy – that’s the leader they want to be. While those leaders still have an ever-growing list of things to do, they know how to take a moment to strategize, versus living in the reactive. In this way they evolve and build empowered teams.
